2024 OER Mini-Grant Guide

A guide developed to support participants in the Library/CTEL OER mini-grant program in spring 2024.

Creative Commons Basics

"Creative Commons licenses give everyone from individual creators to large institutions a standardized way to grant the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. From the reuser’s perspective, the presence of a Creative Commons license on a copyrighted work answers the question, What can I do with this work?"

- About CC Licenses from creativecommons.org

The following 5-minute-ish video uses photographs as its examples of CC-licensed works, but the concepts are the same for written works.

I chose this video because I like the way it covers all of the following:

  • the relationship between Creative Commons and copyright
  • the separate elements of Creative Commons licensing
  • the spectrum of "open"-ness of the Creative Commons licenses
  • places to find CC-licensed images, which can be useful when creating ancillaries such as slide decks
