5Rs

Open educational resources are those shared with permissions that allow users to engage in the 5 Rs:

  • Retain (make, own, and control copies)
  • Revise (edit, adapt, and modify your copy)
  • Remix (combine your original/revised copy with other work to make new work)
  • Reuse (use your original. revised, or remixed copy publicly)
  • Redistribute (share you original/revised/remixed resource with others).

Resources released under a Creative Commons license or in the public domain are common kinds of open resources!

  • Allows adaptation and redistribution in any format
  • Attribution must be given to the creator
  • Allows for commercial use

CC-BY-SA

  • Allows adaptation and redistribution in any format
  • Attribution must be given to the creator
  • Adaptations must be released under identical terms

CC-BY-NC

  • Allows adaptation and redistribution in any format for noncommercial purposes only
  • Attribution must be given to the creator

CC-BY-NC-SA

  • Allows adaptation and redistribution in any format for noncommercial purposes only
  • Attribution must be given to the creator
  • Adaptations must be released under identical terms

CC-BY-ND

  • Allows copying and redistribution of the material in unadapted/unchanged form only
  • Attribution must be given to the creator
  • Allows for commercial use

CC-BY-NC-ND

  • Allows copying and redistribution of the material in unadapted/unchanged form only, for non-commercial purposes only
  • Attribution must be given to the creator

The CC Public Domain Dedication removes all restrictions on how the material may be used, shared, or altered.
